The Conservancy
was founded by Dr. and Mrs. John Bailey to question the use
of chemical herbicides for controlling the weed growth in
Conneaut Lake. Since then, the Conservancy has expanded its
charter to encompass the entire French Creek Watershed, addressing
issues such as water quality, preservation of land, habitat,
scenic beauty, and quality of life.
CONSERVATION
ACHIEVEMENTS
|
|
| •
Annual Creek Cleanup |
Every spring,
since 1993, canoeists and hikers retrieve trash averaging
2000 lbs each year.
|
| |
| •
Weed Harvester on Conneaut Lake |
The
harvester
removes plant debris from the lake, decreasing eutrophication
and minimizing the amount of herbicide needed to be applied
to the lake each year.
|
| |
| •
Meadville, Pennsylvania wastewater treatment plant |
Urged the construction
of a new wastewater treatment plant in the City of Meadville.
The old plant was failing, resulting in periodic large discharges
of insufficiently treated wastewater to French Creek.
|
| |
| •
Educational Activities |
Sponsors annual
activities, such as canoe trips and nature walks, for members
to enjoy and and explore the French Creek Watershed.
|
| |
| •
French Creek Recreational Trails organization |
Assisted with
the formation of the French Creek Recreational Trails organization.
|
| |
| •
Soil and Water Conservation Practices |
Sponsored improvements
to Conservancy land trust properties, such as planting willows
to control stream bank erosion.
|
| |
| •
French Creek Greenway |
Works with local
municipalities to develop a public-use recreational trail
system, or Greenway,
along French Creek in the Meadville area.
|
| |
